Why would I need a static IP address?

Updated 3 months ago.

Due to the increasing scarcity of IPv4 addresses, MetroNet utilizes Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT) for our DHCP IP addresses. This means that the IP address that your equipment uses and the IP address that remote websites or server will see are effectively two different IP addresses. This can break some services that require that the IP address does not change (some VPN services), and it also means that port forwarding will not work, as external-originating connections are unable to get directly to your service via an IP address.

The static IP addresses that MetroNet assigns do not use CGNAT, and therefore are not subject to those limitations. If you do not currently have a static IP address and are interested in acquiring one, please reach out to our Business Customer Service department at 855-769-0936.
